Aviemore Stag Day Ideas
"Wow!" is all I had to say the first time I spent a weekend in Aviemore. I had heard that there was a tonne of cool stuff to do up in the Scottish Highlands, but the sheer choice that you have at your disposal here is amazing. Shooting, climbing, driving, jumping and of course drinking are just a few of the things that you can do here. For a bad-ass stag do then Aviemore has to be the destination.

Cracking stag day activities in Aviemore
The Scottish Highlands are a really special kind of place. Although most of the people I ran into were tourists, other stag parties and even a few hen parties, the locals that I did encounter in the bars, cafés and at the activities were all really nice and friendly, and seemed to get a kick out of stag groups.
First up, I have for you one of the most intense and insane-but-fun activities I have ever done, and that is gorge walking. I have done canyoning and gorge walking before (I honestly still have no clue why they are classed as different things!), but here in the Scottish Highlands it was on a whole new level! The water flumes you go down are really fast, the rocks you climb are steep as hell, and the jumps you need to do will make you say "no freaking way"! All in all, this is a great adventure and a 'must do' when you come here.
Aviemore is really cool for white water rafting. I've done this a few times now and I will be honest: the first few times I had this false bravado, but really I was so scared I needed a new pair of pants! Anyway, here they offer different rivers for you to go whitewater rafting in. For example there's the River Spey, which is a wee bit more chilled out, and there's the River Findhorn, which does not piss about and has some of the most mental, pant-wetting rapids in the UK!
One way to take a more relaxed but still really cool look around the amazing Aviemore wilderness is on a quad bike trek. This is more than just flying around on quad bikes. You will be doing that, but your guide will make sure to take you to all the cool places where you can see the real Aviemore, and maybe check out some of the Highland wildlife as well. This is a really fun stag do day activity, and it's great if you want to do something a little bit more relaxing.
Now, if you've browsed through some other entries on this site, you'll notice I have a fondness for paintball. So let’s just say I know my stuff when it comes to paintball. Anyway, here they'll suit you up in the most bad-ass safety gear, you'll look like some kind of commando/ninja hybrid. What I loved about this place was that the “arena” you're battling in is the actual Scottish Highlands! You'll feel like some kind of medieval, Scottish warrior… if they had paintball guns. This is a really fun day and an absolute hit with stag groups.
One way to see Aviemore from a different perspective is with an hour or two at the High Ropes Course. The guys at Tree Zone have made their high ropes course right in the heart of the Ancient Forest. The backdrop is really cool and if that doesn't take your breath away then you can bet that some of the crazy obstacles you'll encounter will! I find that here, someone who keeps their cool has a better chance of beating the course than someone who is super fit. It may be pretty scary, but you'll feel like Batman once you're done with this!
One thing that I really got a kick out of when I stayed here in Aviemore was the clay pigeon shooting. I'll never forget the first time I held a shotgun and killed a man… Wait – that never happened! I mean when I shot my first clay… With the Highland woodlands around you, shooting those clays is a somewhat surreal experience. The lads here are great and experts in shooting, and they'll make sure that by the end of the day, you guys will feel like a crack team of assassins. This is a good way to enjoy the Scottish outdoors without getting completely knackered.
The fun in Aviemore doesn't stop there!
It sure as hell does not, my friends! Here are a few more of the most incredible things you can do in Aviemore.
As you're in the Highlands you might want to shoot something, but in a more old school way. Or maybe you just love the Disney film Brave (hey, I'm not judging!). Well in that case I recommend an hour of archery. Archery is a really great sport, but it can be made even more fun by putting a little wager on it! 'Whoever scores the highest gets a few beers' usually works. He who scores the lowest gets an arrow to the knee! Or maybe something less extreme.
Teamwork, competitiveness and one hell of a great time are all going to happen when you have a raft building competition. You'll be put into teams and then you'll need to use empty drums, wood, rope and other stuff to build a raft. Once you're finished its time to put it to the test and race your buddies. Usually these things either sink or the losers board the winners' raft and kick some butt! No matter what, this is a great time and well worth doing during your stag weekend in Aviemore!
If you want to get on the water, but want none of that 300 mph craziness that whitewater rafting offers, then a more chilled-out way to have some fun on the river is with kayaking. This is such a cool way to have a little fun with your mates, but in a less manic way than many of the other activities in Aviemore. To be honest, I thought this was going to be boring, but it was actually really fun and something I would love to do again. Recommended!
If you want to get up and get down then check out the amazing rock climbing and abseiling here. Rock climbing will see you need to keep your nerve and use your Spidey-Sense as you pretend to be Spiderman and scale a wall. Abseiling is the opposite where you need to work your way down the wall. Both of these are brilliant and the backdrop of the trees and mountains really sets the scene and makes you realise just how remote the Highlands are.
Ways to make sure your Aviemore stag do is epic!
Here is my very own little mini-guide to make sure you see all the cool places in Aviemore!
A great breakfast in Aviemore
They may not open until 8:30 in the morning, but by god The Mountain Cafe have a fine selection of food, a nice warm atmosphere and some good coffee to really start your day of action in Aviemore the right way.
Where to go for lunch
From 12 to 2pm The Old Bridge Inn serves some damn fine Scottish food and other types of dish as well. With their open fire, good booze and diverse menu, the Old Bridge Inn is a really popular spot for guys here in Aviemore. Let me just say that their smoked salmon is amazing!
Taxis in Aviemore
Do they have taxis in Aviemore? Well yeah, but it’s not like a huge city with loads of different firms. The main one here is Gerry's Aviemore Taxis.
When is a bad time to come here?
Well, this is a tough one. You see, in the winter months it's freezing cold here, man, and some activities shut down during the winter months. The flip side of this, though, is that they also offer winter activities up here. But if you have your heart set on things like whitewater rafting, rock climbing and paintball then you'll be disappointed as these will not be on during the really cold winter months.
Sport in Aviemore
Well, there are no football teams or anything like that here. Aviemore is home to the Aviemore Half Marathon which happens every year. I doubt that during a stag weekend you'll want to run a marathon (I know I sure as hell don't!) but at least it’s an option for you fitness fanatics out there.
Festivals in Aviemore
Can you imagine trying to talk a huge band like The Foo Fighters into doing a festival in the freezing cold of Aviemore? While it would undoubtedly be an awesome show, this just isn’t going to happen. But there is a festival here in Aviemore. The Insider Festival is a small, local festival that's about food, music and the arts.
Pharmacy in Aviemore
I know that things can go wrong in Aviemore (I got more than a few cuts and bruises) and it’s all part of the fun of a stag weekend here. But if you do need a pharmacy there are a few here such as Boots. None of the pharmacies are open late, so if you’re going to hurt yourself, then do it before 6pm!
