Why stag parties should be saved

The Spanish town of Tossa de Mar has recently vowed to crack down on hen and stag do events in August, with tight rules surrounding stag weekends for the rest of the year.

Sadly, the mayor of the town is not alone in his dislike, with Barcelona moving to ban happy hour five years ago, and the Mayor of Riga Nils Usakovs similarly complaining about stag parties from the UK.

But isn’t this surely unfair discrimination against the great, even noble tradition of the British stag party?

Stag dos offer the perfect chance for male bonding and celebrating what, in many cases, can be years of friendship. Apart from perhaps big footie games and war films, when else do men get to be all emotional collectively in this way?

The best thing of all? In the morning, thanks to those final four pints, no-one will remember a thing about the emotional outpouring.

It’s also the ideal chance to meet the groom’s friends from other areas of their life, in a gloriously random melting pot of different people from all walks of life.

The great joy of it is that everyone is there to have a blast, so there’s simply not the formality, solemnity or pressure of the wedding itself. Stag weekends are much freer.

What’s more, it’s perfectly possible to organise a stag event these days on which, while you may well drink like a fish, getting wasted is not the only raison d’etre of the gig. You can also learn a new skill, from cocktail making to butchering.

Alternatively, you can take a trip to somewhere you may not have been before, and which you may not otherwise have had the chance to visit.

So perhaps those people who are moving to tighten up on British stag groups overseas (or maybe even ban them altogether) need to think again.

But if you’re worried about killjoys potentially spoiling your big occasion, don’t be. UK stag do ideas can work just as well, whether your bash is held in Newcastle London or Cardiff – and no-one will be placing any limits on it!
